Bienvenidos a the first Film Club Film Blog post.

It’s one of those films that make me feel proud about my heritage; there’s not that many of em.

Complex celestial civilizations, imaginative combat capabilities, etc.

Not too proud though. The film’s intricate character dynamics remind me of the Chinese social scene. Everybody has a trick up their sleeve; “trust no one.”

Unsurprisingly, NeZha ends up winning. He triumphs above all the others’ trickery with sheer rage and determination. This is unrealistic. In the real world, rash people tend to die. Happy endings are rare.

NeZha’s parents are also fairly bland characters. The father is the picture of honor, and the mother is the picture of…being sappy. Though, I can see my parents acting the same as NeZha’s parents. It makes me worry if my parents have ever had the chance to truly become their own person! I hate that I wanted to cry during the film, because I felt manipulated into crying.

I’m surprised that the film was able to premiere in China. It’s about rebelling against corrupt figures of authority who are adamant about maintaining their power. Ring any bells?!

Despite these frustrations, the film was wildly entertaining. I could’ve watched 3 more hours of this. The film, despite being about mass death and whatnot, doesn’t take itself too seriously. Again, entertaining. The climaxes are handled just right; stretched out long enough to make you go “ahh, yes!” And you can count on leaving the theater with a wide smile on your face—happy endings are guaranteed! It’s not a life-changing film, but it’s quite a monumental work! Heck, I didn’t feel like watching an intense, life-changing film last Saturday. NeZha 2 was what I needed.
